My parathyroidectomy was today at around 11am with Dr Biggerstaff in Indianapolis. During pre-op preparations I almost fainted when they were trying to place the I.V. and got very nauseous because of the pain. During surgery, he found one adenoma about 20mm in size. This is bigger than expected. On the ultrasound it was estimated be about 9mm in size. He said he removed the adenoma in one whole piece. Part of it was cyst and the other part was hard. PTH dropped from 118 to 38. This is good! He checked all 4 parathyroid glands. He checked my thyroid and said it looked ok. However, he did not find the supposed nodule on my thyroid that was seen on the ultrasound scan. He said nothing looked cancerous, however, he will biopsy the adenoma he removed. Not sure when I will receive these results. I did fine with the breathing tube. (I occasionally get larynospasms which put me at higher risk for having one from the breathing tube while under anesthesia. Laryngospasms while sedated can be fatal.). As far as I know, no asthma attacks or laryngospams happened during or after surgery. I had anti-nausea medicine via I.V. and also an anti-nausea patch behind my ear, but I did throw up immediately upon waking. Just once. My front neck muscles are a bit sore. My throat doesn’t hurt really. It’s just dry. I can swallow and breathe fine. My front neck muscles hurt when I cough. Surgery was a couple hours long I think, and I stayed a couple hours in recovery because I had a hard time waking up. I have to say, I don’t feel any different. (I didn’t have any bone pain pre-op but I have severe memory and cognitive problems.). My head is still experiencing confusion and forgetfulness but I hope this will improve in time. The 1 1/2 drive home was fine. The drive turned out to be a couple hours long because we were stuck in traffic, but I napped some. Faith and Jo were crabby because they are both sick. I’m glad I’m home so I can take care of my girls. Hubby is helping, but a Mom’s work is never done!
Our sweet neighbors gave me a get-well gift! Love them!

A quick post-op picture of me and Jo a couple hours after surgery.
