14 Weeks

I would like to first get the bad news out of the way and end this post on a happy note.  So, firstly, my cold has gotten much worse since last week.  If you remember last week’s post I complained that I had a cold all week and that it has gotten worse.  Well, it is so much worse now.  The cold virus has spread and caused me to have terrible sinus headaches.  Stabbing pain in my temple, eye, upper teeth and jaw.  When I sneeze, cough, or puke (yes I still have some morning sickness) this causes my temples, eyes, teeth and jaws to throb with excruciating pain.  If that is not bad enough, I have lost my voice completely.  It broke my heart when the kids at Head Start would hand me a book to read to them and all I could do is turn the pages.  The virus has also caused so much constant coughing, congestion, phlegm and irritation in my lungs that it has caused pleurisy.  Pleurisy is when the lining of your lungs becomes inflamed and causes intense pain when you cough or sneeze.  Sometimes fluid builds up in your lungs because of this as well.  The coughing and sneezing causes sharp stabbing pains, yes, but it also hurts just to breathe deep and simply move around.  It hurts like hell when I throw up!  My body is just under way too much stress.  I have only taken Tylenol.  It has now been 2 weeks that I’ve been fighting this cold and still there is no end in sight.

I did see my baby doctor earlier in the week and he said, “Well your lungs sound clear.  Just keep taking Tylenol.”   Since then, my ongoing cold has caused sinus pain, laryngitis and pleurisy so I plan on going to an urgent care clinic possibly tomorrow and see what else they say.  However, there still may be little they can do since I am pregnant.

Halloween was fun for Faith.  Aaron took her trick or treating.  Unfortunately, shortly after trick or treating, Aaron started feeling really bad.  I found him sleeping on the couch in the middle of the night and he was burning up. 101.4 fever.  He went to the CVS Minute Clinic today and they said he had bronchitis.  Also his sinuses were very inflamed and irritated.  They prescribed antibiotics, Flonase, Ibuprofen, Tylenol and also Tessalon Perle which helps suppress the urge to cough.  Hopefully, all the meds he can take will greatly reduce his duration of this cold and he won’t have to suffer with it for 2 weeks or more like me.  And I’m sure it will prevent him from getting sinus pain, laryngitis and pleurisy!  Lucky him!  I’m jealous he is being treated and I’m not.   I’ve been suffering way too long.. especially while trying to grow a human being inside of me.

Faith did have fun trick or treating, but she is also dealing with mild cold symptoms; coughing and sore throat.  She also went to see the pediatrician earlier in the week but they didn’t prescribe antibiotics since it’s a virus.  While she was there she did get the flu shot, so hopefully she won’t get the flu this winter!

Faith didn’t go trick or treating very long but was very happy with the treats she got from her neighbors.  I will be posting the Halloween 2015 video as soon and I have the time and energy to create it.

Now onto the happy news!  The baby’s genetic screening results are NORMAL!  No down syndrome or any other genetic disorders.  We are having a healthy baby!

We also found out the gender :)

IT’S A GIRL!  Another daddy’s girl for sure!  Most likely another curly-haired blue-eyed baby girl that will have Daddy wrapped around her little finger :)

Thanks to my sister, Wendy, for preparing the box and balloons and for snapping the pics.  They turned out great.

What baby looks like at 14 weeks…

This week’s big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck her thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, her facial muscles are getting a workout as her tiny features form one expression after another. Her kidneys are producing urine, which she releases into the amniotic fluid around her — a process she’ll keep up until birth. She can grasp, too, and if you’re having an ultrasound now, you may even catch her sucking her thumb. In other news: Your baby’s stretching out. From head to bottom, she measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and she weighs 1 1/2 ounces. Her body’s growing faster than her head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, her arms will have grown to a length that’s in proportion to the rest of her body. (Her legs still have some lengthening to do.)  She’s starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over her body. Your baby’s liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it’s doing its job right — and her spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can’t feel her tiny punches and kicks yet, her hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

13 Weeks

I got the results from my EKG. It confirmed that I do have an abnormal heartbeat.  The thyroid test came back normal.  I have an appointment with the cardiologist on November 9th.

I have been very sick this week.  I started getting a cough last Sunday, and now I feel so much worse.  I caught a cold from the kids at Head Start.  I have a very painful cough, lots of congestion and wheezing that is wreaking havoc on my asthma.  I can’t sleep because I can’t breath through my nose, and when I breathe through my mouth my throat stings.  My throat is just killing me.  It hurts to drink or eat anything.  I have a low grade fever which I’m keeping down with Tylenol.  My heart palpitations are worse no doubt due to the stress on my body because of this cold.  And of course, I am still nauseous and throwing up.  I hope this is not putting additional stress on the baby.

I have a baby check-up tomorrow morning.  I’ll make sure to ask them to check the baby’s heartbeat to make sure everything is ok.  I will tell them about my upper respiratory infection but I don’t think there is anything I can take for it.  I think the only antibiotics that are safe to take during pregnancy are penicillin and I’m allergic to penicillin.

Next weekend is Halloween and I hope I feel better enough to go out and enjoy it with Faith.  She has been outside with daddy this week doing yard work.  I wish I could be out there with them, but I’ve been swamped with homework and miserable because of this cold.  I’m so glad that Faith is not sick yet though, and she is enjoying the fall weather :)

This is what baby looks like at 13 weeks…

pregnancy-week-13-fingerprints_square

Your baby’s tiny fingertips have fingerprints, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you’re having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (about the size of a pea pod) and weighs nearly an ounce.

12 Weeks

It has been a somewhat frightening week for me.  I went to the doctor this week for a genetic screening blood test (I won’t get the results of the test for a couple weeks.)  While I was there,  I mentioned I was having some heart palpitations.  I didn’t think it was a big deal, but they did.  They sent me to the hospital for an EKG.  They also drew more blood to check my thyroid (I guess thyroid problems can effect your heart.)  I am still waiting to hear the results of those tests.  On November 9th, I have to see a cardiologist.  I will be sent home with a heart monitor I’ll have to wear for 24 hours.

Heart palpitations are more common in pregnant women because of the increased blood supply and the pregnancy hormones that make your heart beat faster and harder.  So I didn’t think it was a great concern.  However,  I have been having them very frequently.  Throughout the day and night.  While I was in the doctor’s office, I started counting them, and I had about 4 heart palpitations in less than an hour.  It feels like my heart is skipping a beat.  I feel my heart move in my chest.  When the doctor was listening to my heart, she noticed the irregular heartbeat.  She said I was having extra heartbeats.  I hope it is nothing serious.  Please say a prayer that all will be ok.

The doctor also checked the baby while I was there.  She had a small handheld ultrasound device.  She moved the wand around my belly searching for a heartbeat.  The minutes were ticking by and still I hadn’t heard a heartbeat.  I was starting to panic but then FINALLY we heard it.  130 beats per minute.  She said it sounded great.  She also said I have a very active baby which was why it was so heart to track the heartbeat.  Baby was moving around all over the place!  Yay!  Happy and active! :)

In other news,  I am still nauseous.  Big surprise right? :)   Not feeling any better yet but praise God this is my last week of my first trimester!  Once I’m out of the first trimester, my chances of a miscarriage drop considerably.  I would only have a 1 or 2% chance of miscarrying at this point.  Thank you, Jesus.

Faith said she wanted to look like a werewolf in this picture.  She’s showing off her fangs lol.

What baby looks like at 12 weeks…

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby’s fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won’t be able to feel it.

His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.

Meanwhile, nerve cells are multiplying rapidly, and in your baby’s brain, synapses are forming furiously. His face looks unquestionably human: His eyes have moved from the sides to the front of his head, and his ears are right where they should be. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over 2 inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.
